Diving can have many different facets outside of purely recreation. DTL’s Divemaster trainees Mariana and Jurgen have just recently learned that from experience! For three days they used their diving skills to do something different from their regular duties at the dive centre. They had a great opportunity to assist EcoStrategic – an Australian based marine and coastal environmental consulting company - during its latest project in East Timor.
The work took place in Tibar Bay, a few kilometers west of Dili, and Mariana and Jurgen were diving with the marine biologists, while helping them measuring the density and the extension of the bay’s coral and sea grass bottom. Both rated the diving as brilliant, as they had the chance to learn more about marine biology techniques while diving in gorgeous dive spots almost still unexplored so far.
Mariana said that “It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to use my dive skills in a different way, while learning at the same time a bit more about marine biology and the coastal area around Dili. And it was all great fun!”
For Jurgen, “It was great to be a part of this team, all with the like mindedness for the love and appreciation of Timor´s beauty below the surface. It was an inspiring and an incredible learning experience. Thank you to both EcoStrategic and Timor Leste!”
