The Frogfish of Tasi Tolu
Thursday, 06 June 2013
Those of you who read our blog regularly and follow our Facebook page will know how much we love frogfish here at DTL… In recent weeks we have been spotting a number of froggies around Tasi Tulo, our local muck diving site, just ten minutes drive from Dili. Frogfish are a kind of anglerfish, and instead of a dorsal fin they have a rod with a lure at the end of it, used to attract prey. This means they don’t tend to move around very much, making them hard to spot! They can often be very brightly coloured to blend in with their surroundings – as you’ll see from the photos! They also vary in size a fair bit. Our bright green froggie is around 6-7cm, whereas our orange froggie weighs in at a tiny 3-4cm. The black froggie we found is over 15cm. The frogfish we have found around Tasi Tulo are all around the 16-20m mark, making it a super dive site for both PADI Open Water and PADI Advanced Open Water divers.
